The incoherent (211) twin boundary in Cu was imaged by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), using a newly designed high-voltage high-resolution microscope. An innovative procedure of automatic structure refinement by off-line digital image processing is applied to determine the atomistic structure of the grain boundary at a well defined level of confidence. The result verifies molecular statics (MS) calculations, which predict the formation of a thin slab with 9R structure in the boundary.
