PYRENE EXCIMER FORMATION DYNAMICS IN A SINGLE MICROCAPSULE BY SPACE-RESOLVED AND TIME-RESOLVED FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY

Fluorescence characteristics of a single microcapsule containing a toluene solution of pyrene were studied by three-dimensional space- and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Although pyrene excimer formation dynamics observed for the microcapsules by spatially-unresolved spectroscopy did not obey simple excimer formation kinetics (i.e., Birks kinetic model), that for a single microcapsule measured by spatially-resolved spectroscopy was shown to be described by the Birks kinetics model. The efficiency and dynamics of the excimer formation in individual capsules were different between the capsules owing to the concentration distribution of pyrene in the capsules. The importance of dynamic fluorescence spectroscopy for an individual small particle is discussed.
