TRIMETHYL SELENIDE . A URINARY METABOLITE OF SELENITE

A detoxification metabolite of selenite (X1) was isolated from rat urine by ionexchange chromatography and precipitation as the reineckate salt. X1 is very basic and its chloride salt was found to have a maximum molecular weight of 193.5 ± 15 per selenium. X1 cochromatographed with synthetic trimethyl selenide on paper in two solvent systems. The NMR spectra of trimethyl selenide and X1 both contained one peak at 3.25 ppm from tetramethyl silane. Trimethyl selenide and X1 both gave mass peaks for dimethyl selenide, methyl selenide, and hydrogen selenide when heated to 175-180 ° in a mass spectrometer. From the data presented, it seems most likely that the major urinary detoxification metabolite of selenite is trimethyl selenide. © 1969.
