QUENCHING OF ALKALI FLUORESCENCE BY RARE GASES

摘要
Previous measurements of the cross section for the de-excitation of Na 3p 2P atoms by Ar have produced widely differing results. Using the photo-dissociation technique, this cross section has been remeasured, and several other alkali-rare-gas systems investigated. In no case was quenching observed. The calculated upper limit for each cross section was below 5·2 × 10-21 m2, and in particular for Na 3p 2P in Ar it was 1·4 × 10-21 m2.
