The plane-wave shielding properties of advanced composite cylindrical shells are analyzed, based on a rigorous theory that clearly displays the propagating nature of the electromagnetic field in an anisotropic, multi-tapered, and lossy cylindrical shell structure. In this study, numerical results are presented for graphite/epoxy fiber-reinforced composite shells. In particular, the parameters that influence the shielding effectiveness, such as material properties, cylinder configuration, fiber orientation, and incident wave polarization, are investigated in detail. For design purposes, an empirical formula is also proposed to estimate the shielding effectiveness in the lower frequency range. Finally, a sharp reduction of shielding performance due to resonance is also examined.
