SPECIFIC-HEAT AND PENETRATION DEPTHS OF YBA2CU4O8 AND YBA1.8CA0.2CU4O8 NEAR TC

Specific-heat data around the critical temperature T(c) = 90 K of polycrystalline YBa1.8Ca0.2Cu4O8 show a discontinuity DELTA-C(p)/T(c) almost-equal-to 22 mJ/mol K2. In undoped YBa2Cu4O8 and in YBa2Cu3O7, the corresponding anomalies are 15 mJ/mol K2 and 55 mJ/mol K2. The in-plane London penetration depth of the Ca-doped sample, as deduced from isothermal magnetization data, is lambda-ab(0) almost-equal-to 1700 angstrom, compared to lambda-ab(0) almost-equal-to 2000 angstrom in undoped YBa2Cu4O8, and 1400 angstrom in YBa2Cu3O7.
