Interactions between diethylaminoethyl-dextran and deoxyribonucleic acid. The complexes formed between DEAE-dextran and DNA have been studied. 1. 1. Their solubility depends on the molecular weight of the DNA. Complexes formed with DNA of high molecular weight are insoluble or only very slightly soluble. 2. 2. Since it seems that they are not formed in high salt concentrations, these complexes are probably ionic in nature. The stability of the secondary structure of the DNA is altered by complexing with DEAE-dextran, as judged by the lowering of the melting point (Tm) of the DNA. 3. 3. Due to the factor of solubility, DEAE-dextran selectively favours the fixation of low molecular weight DNA by the cell. This explains how it is possible to increase the infectivity of a viral DNA with DEAE-dextran (see ref. 4), even in the presence of a considerable excess of cellular DNA (see refs. 8 and 9). © 1969.
