MECHANISMS OF PALLADIUM-INDUCED STABILIZATION OF ARSENIC IN ELECTROTHERMAL ATOMIZATION ATOMIC-ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY

Mass spectrometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy were combined to elucidate the mechanisms that control atomization of arsenic and its stabilization by palladium in graphite furnaces. Gaseous species in the furnace were mass analyzed in real time. The As2O3 thermally decomposes, forming arsenic monoxide, higher arsenic oxides, and condensed-phase arsenic, which polymerizes and then sublimates as the dimer. Atomization occurs by dissociative adsorption of the oxide and desorption of the resulting arsenic. Palladium oxide stabilizes arsenic atomization by reacting with the condensed-phase arsenic, preventing evolution of the dimer by forming a [Pd(x)As(y)O(m)] compound or mixed solution. Elemental palladium reacts directly with the As2O3, probably forming the same compound; thus, dimer and oxide losses are completely inhibited.
