COMPLEX STRUCTURES AND SIMPLE IDEAS IN MODULATED ANTIFERROMAGNETS

摘要
When exchange interactions lead to incommensurate ordering in an antiferromagnet, there is an inherent conflict built into the structure. Simple free energy arguments suggest that the value of the ordered moment should be as constant as possible throughout the system, whereas the q-dependence of the interactions demands that the moment vary with position. The application of these ideas is discussed with particular reference to recent results on the magnetic ordering of neodymium and CeAl2.
