摘要
The stability of a high-β theta pinch against tearing modes is investigated using the Vlasov equations in both slab and cylindrical geometries. For the slab case it is shown that necessary and sufficient conditions for stability of one-dimensional equilibria is that the magnetic field have no field reversal For the cylindrical case the stability condition is more stringent; that is, all field configurations with reversals are unstable. In addition, because of the destabilizing effect of rotation, the magnetic field must be sufficiently positive biased in order to achieve stability. When interpreted in terms of the density profile, the stability criterion is equivalent to the condition that profiles with a density maximum on axis are stable while those with a density maximum off axis are unstable.
