PHENOMENOLOGICAL CALCULATION FOR NUCLEAR-MASSES AND CHARGE RADII

Masses for 1372 known nuclei with N greater-than-or-equal-to 28 and Z greater-than-or-equal-to 20, are calculated with a r.m.s. deviation of 385 keV. Only 12 numerical parameters are necessary, plus the definition of some functional forms and the specification of some region boundaries. Direct evidence is given for the need of terms linear in \N - Z\ or N - Z in any mass formula (''isospin drift''). Charge radii of 57 closed-shell nuclei are calculated with a three-parameter formula yielding a chi2 almost-equal-to 1. Very strong indications emerge in favour of an overall compression of matter with neutron excess (''isospin shrinkage''). A reasonably satisfactory fit to all known radii is also presented.
