The paper presents experimental data on negative and positive breakdown characteristics of rod-plane gaps in SF6, N2 and SF6-N2 mixtures. The gap lengths studied extended from 5 to 50mms over a pressure range from 300 Torr to 5 bar. The results show that in non-uniform field gaps the impulse breakdown strength of nitrogen in the practical range of pressure (1 to 2 bar) may be increased above that of SF6 by adding a small amount of SF6 (∼ 0.2%). The breakdown measurements were supplemented with the study of the temporal growth of ionization using a photomultiplier in an attempt to explain this anomalous increase in the breakdown strength.
