Thirty-seven Fusarium strains belonging to different species of the Sporotrichiella section, from different plant and geographic origins, were tested for production of trichothecene derivatives on autoclaved com kernels. The seventeen strains of F. sporotrichioides were able to produce T-2 toxin (up to 1600 mg/kg), HT-2 toxin (up to 500 mg/kg) and neosolaniol (up to 300 mg/kg). One of four strains of F. poae produced diacetoxyscirpenol (80 mg/kg). None of the nine strains of F. tricinctum and of the seven strains of F. chlamydosporum produced T-2 toxin derivatives. The toxicity of the culture extracts towards Artemia salina larvae was strictly related to the occurrence of the above trichothecenes, although two strains of F. tricinctum, non-producers of trichothecenes, showed toxicity related to unidentified compounds. © 1990, British Mycological Society.
