Authors' Synopsis: Tension development, contractility, and length-tension relationships were studied in the isolated perfused beating heart of control and myopathic hamsters. Distensibility of the myocardium was studied by determination of the difference in muscle lengthening produced by the same preload and the degree of stress relaxation during perfusion. Tension development, contractility, and stress relaxation were significantly lower in the myopathic hearts. The relationship between the mechanical function and distensibility of the myopathic myocardium is discussed.
