WAVELENGTH-MODULATED AND TEMPERATURE-MODULATED ULTRAVIOLET-ABSORPTION OF PR-3+ IN ALKALINE-EARTH FLUORIDES

Wavelength-modulated absorption (WMA) spectra of CaF2 containing 0.001-0.5% Pr3+ at 2.14K and the corresponding ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectra at 25K show two sets of 4f2 to 4f5d mod e g) absorption peaks, which prevail at low and high concentrations of Pr3+, respectively. Similar WMA and UV spectra of 4f2 to 4f5d mod eg) transitions in SrF2 and BaF2 crystals containing 0.005% Pr3+ have been measured and can be interpreted in agreement with the corresponding data on Pr3+ in CaF2. The temperature-modulated UV absorption (TMA) of CaF 2 crystals doped with 0.05-0.5% Pr3+ has also been determined between 90 and 300K. The TMA spectra at 90K reveal several peaks which are not obvious in the corresponding WMA spectra. These extra TMA peaks may be included as 4f2 to 4f5d mod eg) absorptions by Pr3+ ions occupying sites which are prevalent at intermediate concentrations of dopant.
