THEORY FOR MAGNETIC-RESONANCE MEASUREMENTS OF DIFFUSION IN ANISOTROPIC FLUIDS

Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin exchange and the enhancement of nuclear spin relaxation frequencies due to the presence of paramagnetics can be used to study diffusion in liquid crystals and membranes. Previous analyses of the diffusion data obtained in this manner assumed isotropic diffusion. In this paper derivations are given for the dependence of the relaxation frequencies measured in these two experiments on the diffusion constants parallel and perpendicular to the director, D∥ and D⊥, respectively. © 1979 American Institute of Physics.
