OXYMETALATION .22. HYDROPEROXYMERCURIATION USING 30-PERCENT HYDROGEN-PEROXIDE

Each of eleven representative alkenes, R1R2CCHR3, has been found to react with an equimolar amount of mercury(II) acetate in about an eightfold excess of 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide to afford the hydroperoxymercurial, R1R2C(OOH)-CH(HgOAc)R3, or a mixture of the hydroperoxymercurial and the corresponding hydroxymercurial, R1R2C(OH)CH(HgOAc)R3, which can be separated by column chromatography (SiO2, CH2Cl2). Eight new hydroperoxymercurials have been characterized. © 1990.
