PREPARATION OF NANOCOMPOSITES OF POLY(ETHYLENE OXIDE) WITH TIS2

Single phase nanocomposites containing TIS2 and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) are prepared by the interaction of colloidal TiS2 with a solution of PEO in N-methyl formamide (NMF). X-Ray diffraction indicates a layered product. The role of NaOH in stabilizing the single-sheet colloid is unclear, but a similar addition of LiOH does not produce the desired colloid. It should be noted that while Li is far more abundant in the solution, Na is selectively incorporated into the nanocomposite forms (c approximate to 14 Angstrom), consistent with the incorporation of an 8 Angstrom double layer of poly(ethylene oxide) between the disulfide sheets. A single-phase product is of appropriate composition Li0.02Na0.25(C2H4O)(0.8)Tis(2) . 0.1NMF. 1NMF. Electronic measurements between 77 and 274 K indicate a conductivity between 10(-2) and 10(-3) S cm(-1), with little temperature dependence.
