摘要
Endodermally-derived, unchitinized intestines from a desert scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis), a freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and a marine shrimp (Penaeus marginatus) were examined for their net water transport responses to imposed transmural osmotic gradients. Shrimp guts rectified osmotic water flow (transfer to lumen far greater than to serosa), while no rectification was seen in scorpion intestine. Differential rectifying properties appear attributable to dissimilar unstirred layer thicknesses in gut submucosal tissues.
