In the reported study, the redox system of potassium persulfate-thiomalic acid (I//1-I//2) was used to initiate the polymerization of acrylamide (M) in aqueous medium. For 20-30% conversion the rate equation is R//p equals minus d left bracket M right bracket /dt equals K left bracket M right bracket left bracket I//1 right bracket ** one-half where R//p is the rate of polymerization. Activation energy is 8. 34 kcal deg** minus **1 mole** minus **1 in the investigated range of temperature 25-45 degree C. M//n is directly proportional to left bracket M right bracket and inversely to left bracket I//1 right bracket . The range of concentrations for which these observations hold at 35 degree C and pH 4. 2 are left bracket I//1 right bracket equals (1. 0-3. 0) multiplied by 10** minus **3, left bracket I//2 right bracket equals (3. 0-7. 5) multiplied by 10** minus **3, and left bracket M right bracket equals 5. 0 multiplied by 10** minus **2 minus 3. 0 multiplied by 10** minus **1 mole/liter. Probable polymerization mechanism is suggested.
