DETERMINATION OF CRITICAL MICELLE CONCENTRATIONS BY BIPOLAR PULSE CONDUCTANCE

A microcomputer-controlled bipolar pulse conductance (BICON) instrument was applied to the conductometric measurement of critical micelle concentrations (CMC). The BICON method provides short conductance measurement times (30 μsec), wide dynamic range (10-1 to 10-8 Ω-1) and freedom from charging effects and bridge balancing. Surfactants studied were cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and benzyl-dimethylhexadecylammonium chloride (BDHA). CMC values determined at 23.7oC were: CTAB (9.4 ± 0.54) × 10-4M; SDS (8.5 ± 0.58) × 10-3 M; and BDHA (4.7 - 0.31) × 10-4M. The high-speed measurement time of the BICON instrument coupled with observed short dilution equilibration times enabled a simple and rapid conductometric dilution titration to be used in the determination of the CMC value for CTAB. © 1980 by Academic Press, Inc.
