THE PREDICTION OF PHOSPHATE COPRECIPITATION WITH CALCITE IN FRESH-WATERS

The application of a model to describe inorganic phosphate coprecipitation with calcite in freshwaters has been reviewed. An approximate form of the coprecipitation equation is developed and tested using data from studies of the coprecipitation kinetics in different river waters. The results indicate that within certain limits of pH and phosphate concentration, the simplified equation describes the adsorption function and hence coprecipitation behaviour reasonably well, i.e. within 10% of the value obtained using the full form of the coprecipitation equation. The tables presented enable an estimate of the adsorption function for different pH, calcium and phosphate concentrations. When the adsorption function is not significantly changed during the coprecipitation reaction, the phosphate coprecipitation rate is linearly related to the calcite precipitation rate. © 1990.
