A Galerkin finite element procedure is adopted to solve the thermostructural problem for generally anisotropic as well as symmetrically laminated composite plates. The two-dimensional temperature field is first computed and subsequently, the quasi-static inplane response of the structure is evaluated. Both steady and transient states are analysed, taking into account all conventional modes of heat transfer and the temperature dependence of several thermomechanical properties. Nonlinearity has been tackled with the help of the Euler's backward difference procedure in conjunction with a modified Newton-Raphson scheme for convergence.
