Between 1982 and 1993, in a general hospital we have isolated and tested each year about one thousand Escherichia coli strains, the most frequently isolated bacteria. This species is naturally susceptible to many antibiotics. However, an increase in amino-penicillins resistance, the commonest mechanism of resistance observed, can be pointed out to day in 40-45 % of the strains. The fluoro-quinolones are more active but the proportion of resistant strains to pefloxacin increased slowly from 2 % in 1989 to 8 % in 1993. The activity of the others antibiotics studied is stable. The extensive use of amoxycilline and ofloxacine in our hospital (as everywhere) can explain in this evolution.
