Exceton splitting of absorption spectra in radical dimers

摘要
Splitting of UV absorption bands of the substituted pyridinyl radicals by formation of CT type dimers is discussed using an esciton model. From observed results and theoretical considerations a kind of twisted model is proposed in the dimer, where the two radicals lie one above the other in parallel planes, but are rotated from each other by a small angle around an axis perpendicular to the molecular planes. This twisted model may be ascribed to steric hindrance of bulky substituents to the dimer formation.
