REACTION PROCESSES OF VANADIUM DICHLORIDE OXIDE AND VANADIUM TRICHLORIDE WITH OXYGEN

The products formed by the heating of VCl//2O in an oxygen stream at various temperatures were examined by chemical and X-ray analysis. The reaction products between VCl//3 and oxygen were examined in the same manner. The reaction process between VCl//2O and oxygen may be represented as follows: VCl//2O reacts with oxygen above ca. 170 degree C to form V//2O//5 and VCl//3O, 12VCl//2O(s) plus 3O//2(g) yields 2V//2O//5(s) plus 8VCl//3O(g), and this reaction is accompanied by the reaction, 4VCl//2O(s) plus 3O//2(g) yields 2V//2O//5(s) plus 4Cl//2(g).
