A presomite twin blastocyst was found in serial sections of a uterus of the golden marmoset, Leontocebus rosalia. At this early, prevascular stage the chorial membranes had already fused and formed a single cavity. This finding and other specimens described in the literature are taken to contradict the suggestion that the reason why primates may be spared the freemartin condition of ruminants lies in later chorial fusion. Other possible reasons for this apparent and notorious discrepancy in twin development between these two Orders are briefly examined. © 1969 S. Karger AG, Basel.
