THE HO2 RADICAL UV ABSORPTION-SPECTRUM MEASURED BY MOLECULAR MODULATION, UV DIODE-ARRAY SPECTROSCOPY

The molecular modulation technique, coupled with UV spectroscopy, was used to monitor the behaviour of HO2 radicals produced by the near-UV-modulated photolysis of Cl2 in the presence of H-2 and O2. Experiments were carried out at both the Max-Planck-Institut (Mainz) and AEA Technology (Harwell), allowing two separate determinations of the HO2 UV absorption spectrum. These are in excellent agreement throughout the wavelength range 200-260 nm, with sigma-220(HO2) = 3.4 x 10(-18) cm2 molecule-1. A comparison with previous measurements is made. Removal of HO2 in the chemical system used in the present experiments occurs by self-reaction (eqn. (4)). The value of k4 at 298 K and 760 Torr was found to be (2.44 +/- 0.20) x 10(-12) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 with O2 as the bath gas, and (2.84 +/- 0.30) x 10(-12) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 with a bath gas of predominantly N2.
