PROTON POLARIZATION NEAR J-DEPENDENT CROSS-SECTION MINIMUM IN 40CA(D,P)41CA'(3.95 MEV) REACTION

Using incident deuterons with energy Ed of 11.0 MeV, the polarization of protons from the Ca40(d, p) reaction leading to the 3.95-MeV state of Ca41 has been measured at three angles across the J-dependent minimum in the cross-section angular distribution near θc.m.=100°. A 180° double-focusing magnetic spectrometer focused the proton group under investigation into a carbon polarimeter. The use of three dEdx and two E solid-state detectors connected in two parallel triple-coincidence configurations kept the back-ground below 4%, even though the cross section was very low (240μb/sr). The measured polarization passes smoothly through zero near the cross-section minimum as follows: -0.128±0.039, +0.061±0.046, and +0.151±0.041 at laboratory angles of 84.2°, 97.1°, and 110.0°, respectively. Cross-section angular distributions for Ca40(d, p) reactions to the ground, 1.95-, 2.47-, and 3.95-MeV states in Ca41 and for elastic deuteron scattering with Ed=10.96±0.03 MeV were also measured. Discrepancies of about 25% exist between these distributions and those of Lee et al. © 1969 The American Physical Society.
