摘要
Tested the hypothesis that the change in type of word associations children give as they grow older, from syntagmatic (different part of speech than stimulus word) to paradigmatic (same part of speech), is related to a reduced tendency to give functional definitions for words. Ss were 72 4-9 yr. old children. The number of syntagmatic word associations produced was negatively related to age (-.49), as was the number of functional word definitions (-.41). Syntagmatic word associations and functional definitions were significantly and positively related, although the relationship was small (.27).
