BIOCHEMICAL AND IMMUNOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF CALCIUM-DEPENDENT AND CALCIUM-INDEPENDENT PKC ISOENZYMES IN RENAL ISCHEMIA

The PKC α, β, δ, ε(lunate) and ζ isoenzyme changes in the rat kidney cortex have been investigated after temporary occlusion of the renal artery, followed by reperfusion for up to 4 h. Increased PKC α, δ and ε(lunate) immunoreactivity and PKC α activity occurred within 60 min of postischemic reflow, while PKC β and ζ were unmodified. Increased PKC β activity was present at later times of reflow (120 min), suggesting that the initial events of the regenerative repair response after an ischemic insult implicate the activation of specific PKC isoenzymes (α, δ, ε(lunate)), playing a role in the control of cell proliferation. © 1993 Academic Press.
