REDUCTION OF FIELD DEPENDENCE IN CHRONIC ALCOHOLIC PATIENTS

30 chronic male alcoholics were administered the Witkin Rod and Frame Test (RFT) and divided into experimental and control groups. After 1 hr. of perceptual isolation, Ss showed a significant reduction in field dependence on a 2nd RFT while the controls showed only chance variations in RFT-2 performance. Results tend to negate the hypothesis that field dependence is a stable and unalterable characteristic, and are explained on the basis of increased awareness of bodily sensations and their availability for use in orientation tasks.
