WATER-ADSORPTION ON CU(111) - EVIDENCE FOR VOLMER-WEBER FILM GROWTH

Time-resolved high-resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy was used to monitor directly the concentration of water on the Cu (111) surface as a function of substrate temperature and time. At low mass coverages (less-than-or-similar-to 2/3 monolayer), a metastable species is formed which desorbs with zero-order kinetics. Above a critical coverage, this species converts to a second, more stable form consisting of 3D clusters of polycrystalline ice. The metastable species arises because of kinetic limitations in Volmer-Weber (3D island) film growth.
