OXYGEN-UPTAKE IN LARVAL BOLLWORMS (HELIOTHIS-ZEA) INFECTED WITH IRIDESCENT VIRUS

摘要
We measured oxygen uptake of iridescent virus infected and noninfected cotton bollworm (Heliothis zea) larvae. Oxygen uptake was measured in 8- through 17-day noninfected larvae, and in 8- through 24-day infected larvae. Readings were taken at 12-hr intervals so that ante meridiem (am) and post meridiem (pm) readings were made for each day. There were dramatic differences in oxygen uptake between the two groups. This was particularly true in days 7 through 12 of larval age. The greatest oxygen uptake in the infected group occurred on day 8 pm of larval age when 20.6 μl/hr was consumed. The minimum of uptake occurred in the infected group on day 20 am when 0.35 μl/hr was consumed. The maximum oxygen uptake in the noninfected group occurred on day 8 am when 1.32 μl/hr was consumed. The minimum in this group occurred on day 11 am when 0.29 μl/hr O2 was consumed. © 1991.
