NEUTRINO MASSES FROM GALACTIC SUPERNOVAE AND LARGE WATER CERENKOV DETECTORS

The range of mu and tau-neutrino masses accessible to large water Cerenkov detectors via the observation of neutrinos from galactic supernovae is discussed. We show that the available neutrino mass window from detecting late (t > 10 s) arrivals is approximately 75 eV-200 keV. A shortage of early (t < 0.1 s) events may signal a mass as small as 30 eV, but it seems unlikely that any technique using galactic supernovae may be used for masses as low as 10 eV.
