Diurnal Variation in the Undisturbed Continental Aerosol: Results from a Measurement Program in Arizona

The concentration of Aitken nuclei (AN) in the ambient atmosphere seems to undergo a daily cycle in many continental locations. However, details of the cycle vary from site to site. In this study, hourly variation of AN level was recorded on a mountaintop in southern Arizona between November 1986 and April 1988. During periods of atmospheric stability, air samples obtained at the mountain site were representative of the mid-troposphere. Analysis of these clean-air samples revealed a diurnal AN variation on most days. The AN variation with time differed slightly from that observed at other geographic locations.
