EFFECTS AND MECHANISM OF ACTION OF A LIGNOSULPHONATE ON EXPERIMENTAL GASTRIC ULCERATION IN RATS

A purified low molecular weight lignosulphonate, considered to be a substituted polymer (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylpropane-) n, protects against the development of experimental gastric ulcers when administered orally to pyloric-ligated rats. The protective effect is not due to changes in volume or acidity of the gastric content but parallels the inhibition of pepsin proteolysis in rat gastric juice. The lignosulphonate investigated is a competitive inhibitor of pepsin proteolysis and is more specific in action than most previously described compounds. It is without antilipemic effects and possesses minimal blood anticoagulant activity. The activity of this macroanion probably does not depend only on the sulphur content but is rather a function of the entire molecular structure. © 1968.
