Phonophobia is defined as an abnormal discomfort for suprathreshold sound which does not annoy healthy individuals. This study has demonstrated that phonophobia is present in all cases after stapedectomy, and that the symptoms disappear within a year. The cause of phonophobia has been discussed, and lack of central nervous inhibition due to inactivity is found to be the most reasonable cause. © 1969 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
