CHRONIC MELIOIDOSIS - A CASE IN SYDNEY

The first case of melioidosis reported in Sydney is presented. Clinically the infection closely resembled chronic pulmonary tuberculosis, a significant difference being abscess formation in the chest wall, neck and prostate gland. The case is remarkable for a course of 19 years, the longest on record. The nephrotic syndrome due to amyloidosis was a late complication. Bacteriological diagnosis was made from autopsy material. An immunodiffusion system supported the established methods of culture, biochemical testing and guinea pig inoculation in identifying Pseudomonas pseudomallei. © 1969 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
