IR spectral data show that, in contrast to alpha-ferrocenylcarbinols which form OH ... pi and OH ... M intramolecular hydrogen bonds, alpha-ruthenocenyl- and alpha-osmocenylcarbinols, as well as their permethylated analogues, involve hydrogen bonds of only one type, OH ... M. The relative stabilities of the cyclic chelates closed by the OH ... M hydrogen bonds are consistent with the sequence of metal basicities (Fe < Ru < Os). The variations in influence of the carbinol group substituents on the stability of OH ... Ru(Os) and OH ... Fe bonds are interpreted in terms of the results of conformational calculations. The absence of a correlation between the stability of cyclic chelates and the proton-donating ability of the OH group is explained by the predominance of steric effects.
