PRECISE DETERMINATION OF TILT ANGLES BY X-RAY-DIFFRACTION AND REFLECTION WITH ARACHIDIC ACID MONOLAYERS

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction data with wave-vector transfer parallel and perpendicular to the surface are reported for arachidic acid monolayers on water. The data confirm a recently established structural model of a pressure-dependent chain tilt for molecular areas between 20 and 24 angstrom-2. The very precise measurement of the tilt angle (approximately 1-degree accuracy) gives confidence to angles previously derived from measurements of specular reflectivity. We can also resolve the two different spacings expected for an orthorhombic lattice enabling us to comment on the anisotropy of the compressibility.
