摘要
The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) was a $150 million, five-year effort to address some of the major problems facing highway engineers in the USA. This Paper discusses the $10 million spent on the multi-billion dollar problem of corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete due to de-icing salt and sea salt. The Paper highlights some of the important products of the SHRP structures research. These include new techniques such as the electrochemical chloride removal and the use of corrosion inhibitors. Corrosion rate measurement and methods of assessing sealer effectiveness, waterproof membranes and concrete permeability are reviewed. United Kingdom and European practice is also discussed.
