MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF QUALITATIVE DATA

Three methods for analyzing qualitative data are introduced: 1) Multivariate Analysis of Contingencies-I1 [MAC-111 (based on the early work of Guttman, 1941), 2) Multidimensional Scalogram Analysis4 [MSA-I] (involving a unique definition of contiguity which presupposes minimum assumptions), and 3) Multidimensional Scalogram Analysis-I1 [MSA-111 (involving a graph theoretic and smallest space logic). An outline of the basic equations and assumptions of each are presented. One example of a conceptual data matrix is analysed by both MSA-I and MSA-11 and the results are discussed vis-a-vis a hand analysis by Guttman imposing parallel straight line boundaries preserving ordered categories.
