WATER-QUALITY OF AGRICULTURAL COASTAL-PLAIN WATERSHEDS

Runoffs from six rural watersheds in the Coastal Plain were monitored over a period of five years. Nitrogen, phosphorus and COD loading rates were developed for all the watersheds and related to land use and soil type. The nitrogen, phosphorus and COD content of rainfall was also measured. Annual total nitrogen loading rates varied from 3. 2 to 42. 5 kgha** minus **1 and annual total phosphorus loading rates from 0. 37 to 1. 08 kgha** minus **1. More than 50% of the nitrogen and phosphorus loads occurred in baseflow. Highest nitrogen loads occurred on watersheds with well drained soils.
