EVIDENCE FOR LARGE ORGANIC SCATTERERS (50-200NM DIAMETER) IN HUMIC-ACID SAMPLES

Photon correlation spectroscopy (dynamic light scattering) indicated that small but significant amounts of relatively large scatterers (50-200 nm diameter) are present in a number of soil, lake and groundwater humic acid samples as well as in natural waters of high humic content. Size was observed to vary as a function of Ca(II) or La(III) concentration, but not of pH nor ionic strength. The scatterers' size was not affected by EDTA, fluoride ions, surfactants, and ultrasound. Zeta potentials were measured by electrophoresis coupled to photon correlation spectroscopy, as a function of pH, ionic strength and the amount of added Ca(II), La(III) and surfactants. These negatively charged organic particles may play a role in the retention and mobilization of organic compounds and metals in the environment, as catalysts for the hydrolysis of organic compounds, and as nucleation centres. © 1990.
