The system MnGa2S4-MnSc2S4 was studied by X-ray diffraction methods on quenched samples. Two intermediate phases are described: (1) a compound MnGa2-2xSc2xS4 for 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.3 crystallizing in the FeGa2S4-type structure and (2) a new olivine-type compound MnGaScS4 (x = 0.5), which exhibits no phase width. The structure of MnGaScS4 was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R = 0.018 (space group Pnma, No. 62, a = 1279.6(1), b = 742.6(1), c = 608.6(1) pm, Z = 4). The IR spectra of the new phases and the two border compounds are given. © 1990.
