Complete analyses of the proton spectra of vinylacetylene and bis(vinylethynyl)mercury have been performed, and show good correlation of both signs and relative magnitudes for the two 5J and the one 4J coupling constant pairs, with a regression coefficient of 0.999. Proton spectra for 5-chloromercuri-thiophene-2-aldehyde have been recorded in a range of solvents. The magnitude of the J coupling between the 199Hg isotope and the aldehyde proton shows a ca. 20-fold increase in magnitude relative to the corresponding HH interaction in thiophene-2-aldehyde. A marked solvent dependence is also observed, ranging from 5J(H, Hg) = 20.8 Hz in CDCl3 to 26.5 Hz in dimethylsulphoxide. © 1979.
