EFFECT OF A MODEL ON VERBAL BEHAVIOR IN COUNSELING

Tested the effect of a model on verbal behavior in an initial counseling interview. An orientation program featuring a model was designed to increase the frequency of self-reference in counseling. 90 8th-graders served as Ss. 15 boys and 15 girls saw and heard the model on video tape; another group of 30 only heard the model on audio tape; and a 3rd group of 30 acted as a control and neither saw nor heard the model. Exposure to the model tended to increase self-reference during counseling. Conclusions regarding the use of modeling to influence the counseling process are discussed. (21 ref.)
