FLUX PINNING AND CREEP FROM COLUMNAR DEFECTS IN HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS

The introduction of linear defects by means of heavy ion irradiation (5.8 GeV Pb) leads to drastic enhancement of the flux pinning in BSCCO and YBCO crystals. In irradiated samples, the magnetic relaxation is depressed but not completely eliminated. The magnetic decay is non-logarithmic indicating flux creep via a nucleation process. The effective barrier for flux creep corresponding to vortex loop formation is much lower than the pinning energy by columnar defects.
