INFLUENCE OF COTYLEDONS ON EMBRYONIC AXES DURING INDUCTION OF DORMANCY IN CORYLUS-AVELLANA

Removal of a cotyledon from dormant hazel seeds can stimulate germination. Such removal results in a stimulated synthesis of RNA in the embryonic axis within 24 h after the excision. Growth of isolated embryonic axes in liquid culture is partially inhibited by Actinomycin D, markedly inhibited by αfamanitin and totally prevented by cordycepin and cycloheximide. Early axis growth appears therefore to be dependent on transcription and/or poly adenylation of mRNA. Sucrose is necessary for growth of excised axes in liquid culture but when one‐third of one cotyledon is left attached to the axis sucrose is inhibitory to growth. Copyright © 1979, Wiley Blackwell.
